1991 Nissan 300ZX intermittent and irregular tickover and lumpy at low revs

Car: Nissan 300ZX
Year: 1991
Variant: LWB Twin Turbo
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
This problem is intermittent and is not temperature reliant. Some days the tickover fluctuates between 800 and 2200 and the car is generally lumpy and jerky at low speeds [in traffic etc]. At other times it runs as smooth as silk. When the fault occurs, I can hear a "relay chattering" type noise which comes from a small unit attached to one of the many small breather pipes under the bonnet by the driver's bulkhead.

It is good that you can actually hear something going on when this fault occurs, generaly these faults can be a little more difficult to find.I would say if you can hear the relay clicking you have a wiring or connection problem to it. Try physically moving the wiring.

Did try this, but no change. Someone suggested it might be a temperature sensor problem. What do you think?

It is possibly a coolant temp sensor problem and the clicking you refer to is a solonoid that is supposed to operate at a certain temperature and if the sensor is faulty the ecu maybe intermitantly operating thie solonoid when it should not be doing so. You can check the temp sensor in the following way after you have located it, it will be of the two wire type, it will have a 5V supply to it and cold it can have up to 4.5V coming out of the other wire coming down to around 1V when at operating temp
