Won't rev

2001 Mitsubishi Shogun 3.5 V6 (petrol) Elegance
Car: Mitsubishi Shogun
Year: 2001
Variant: 3.5 V6 (petrol) Elegance
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My 2001 Mitsubidshi Shogun won't rev above about 3500 revs in any gear. The symptoms are similar to a rev limiter and I have run injector cleaner through the system, cleaned the EGR valve and QI tell me the cat is fine. The AA and my local garage can't get their laptops tp talk to my ECU so I have no fault codes to check.
Any suggestions as to what I should try next?

3500 rev limit usually means code stored in ecu so goes to limp home mode limiting revs to 3 3.5
code needs reading but light should be on try disconnecting battery to see if cods clear
