2001 Mitsubishi Shogun rear wheel skipping/spinning

My 51 plate Shogun 3.3 diesel drives well forward/backwards but when i turn a corner the rear wheels skip and spin and there is a banging noise. Any ideas. Is it safe to drive to a garage ?

Impossible to say without getting it jacked up and checked out . Could be anything from something minor to totally dangerous .
