2008 Mitsubishi Shogun engine suddenly very noisy

The engine suddenly sounds like a tractor ! Noise seems to come from the top middle of engine block but that may be a red herring. No computer indicated faults. Fuel pressure, injectors all ok. Engine runs, revs and drives etc OK. two garages including the local Mitsubishi main agent have no idea as to problem ..... anyone out there with any ideas ?

Sounds like cam problems. Or over fueling/timing issue, (diesel knock)

Not exhaust front pipe/manifold related noise ?

Truthfully if Mitsubishi have no idea what's wrong, then imstumped
