2003 Mitsubishi Pajero whirring noise

Car: Mitsubishi Pajero
Year: 2003
Variant: Exceed
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
When driving you will hear the engine noise change (whirring noise), when you slow down it sounds like it is getting louder, as soon as the cars comes to a complete stop it makes a cluncking noise and then goes back to normal until it does it again. Any ideas?

Definately engine and not something like driveshaft ? If engine check belts / pulleys , alternator as a start .

as mr "w" says engine noise and these vehicles are known for the balancer shaft belt to brake!
not a bad job to check and replace but it can knock the timing belt off and kill the car so id check it out before driving again

Good advice from mr suzuki , should have added to my post to get it checked out asap in case of possible engine damage if that is what the fault is .
