SMOKING PAJERO

1990 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5 TURBO DIESEL EXCEED IMPORT
Car: Mitsubishi Pajero
Year: 1990
Variant: 2.5 TURBO DIESEL EXCEED IMPORT
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi guys and gals from a newbie,
I recently took my 1990 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5td off the road due to large amounts of smelly, white/black clouds of smoke being omitted from the exhaust. On further inspection I discovered oil in the turbo, intercooler, airbox and all connecting pipes. The turbo is still working,(well it's still whistling anyway), however the overall engine power is significantly decreased and the engine doesn't appear to be breathing properly, presumably as a result of all that oil being in places it shouldn't be. I have come to the conclusion that the turbo is probably shot as a result of perished seals or something???, not being a mechanic however, I wondered if anyone had any more educated ideas as to what the problem may be, and also how if at all possible I might remedy it.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to any replies I might receive. Take care all.

ive got an l reg 2.5 i bought it cheep as it was pushing out loads of smoke the balancer belt had broken causing the timing belt to jump a couple of teeth replaced booth belts and £25 later back on road no smoke.its normal to have some oil in intercooler pipes.ive been told its a bit of a common fault, hope this helps.

Thanks Mr Suzuki but all belts are fine. The quantity of oil around these components appears rather excessive to be just a common minor fault.
Anyone else have any similiar problems or any advice? Really don't want to have to scrap her, other than this problem she's a very pretty, tidy motor and has given me little trouble until now.

These Pajero's are very nice but suffer from fuel pump problems. The symptoms you have mention are leading me to think turbo oil seals are gone. You can pick up a cheap turbo for this for about 300. finnaly you can also try to blank the egr valve this may stop the engine from smoking and might even stop too much oil from spewing in to the intake pipes. let me know how you get on

The other VERY common issues on the 2.5's (I have one)

Are:-

1) EGR Valve sticking

2) Injectors wearing out *this is very common*

Hi there. I have just started up my pajero after being off the road for a while and the same thing happen to mine. Black smoke and loss of power. The guys who got it working just un plugged the 2 small breather pipes at the back of the rocker cover which feed the EGR valve. Hay presto!! Lotta of power and no smoke. They know best. Hope this helps. D

I have an x trail with simular problems, and was def the egr valve, i took it out and cleaned with wd40, this fixes the problem for a while which is around 6 months but it will happen again, so i have blocked it off completely using a peice of tin, which was the lid from a baked bean can,and now now problems in thelast year, if you need any more info of how to do this let me know...
