2000 Mitsubishi Pajero revving problems

just bought the car the last owner was driving it when it started revving high by itself and did not switch off straight away any ideas

if all the usuals have been checked cable etc check the balancer belt hasnt broken as they are known to break and can knock the timing belts causing running problems
