Car: Mitsubishi Pajero

I am getting a rumbling/whirring noise while driving. I try to stop immediately. I hear/feel a clunk. I then take off and the noise stops and runs fine until it makes the noise next time.

So many possible causes , it's a case of getting it jacked up and checking for wear in steering , wheel bearings , hub assemblies , transmission , shafts , trans oil levels etc .

Try depressing the clutch when you hear the noise may tell you if it’s transmission related or if it happens in any particular gear

The Pajero is automatic transmission. It made the noise today. As soon as it starts I pull over and stop. the noise then quits.

Is there plenty of fluid in the transmission, maybe worth a fluid flush change if noise is from it.

I checked the fluid level in the transmission and it is full. I have not flushed it or changed it though. Have 79,0000 k on it.
