1991 Mitsubishi Pajero black smoke loss of power

start up somtimes fine with no black smoke after about 10 mins black smoke and loss of power. other times it will be black smoke an loss of power from start

Black smoke in a diesel usually indicates an excess of fuel in the cylinder, so there is either a problem with the fuel delivery system or an air restriction. As it is an intermittent fault, I would suggest it is a fault with the electronic injection (depending on age of the car).

there are two vaccuum valves on the bulkhead that control the opening for the air intakes check these are working if not try to open them manually and wedge them to see if it makes a difference it sounds like your getting more fuel than air

Firstly i would check all rubber hoses from turbo / intercooler, a small split in one of these would result in these problems.

Also check your EGR valve and injectors.

pajeros are prone to dirty egr's and injector failure!
