1998 Mitsubishi FTO gear box will work in triptronic but nothing there in auto on an fto

hi just got an fto the garage has reaplaced the box with a second hand 1 but with waranty so thay dont think its the box that has a problem.but it wont do anything in automatic mode but works and drives fine in triptronic any ideas could it be as simple as a sensor or something.

Probably have to get a scan done to see where fault lies .
