1996 Mitsubishi FTO stalling on ignition...

My car stalls on ignition unless I apply the accelerator slightly. Also, there is a slight ticking sound under the bonnet which eventually goes away. I'd like to have some idea of what the problem could be before going to a garage and getting fleeced!

Maybe you need to clean the throttle body. Sometimes this can cure the problem and bring the tick over back to normal...

If you are still having this problem the solution is simple, attached to you throttle body is a stepper motor, its purpose is to advance the throttle when the engine is cold.
it is held on by two bolts and is a common failling on fto's take it off and give it a clean and try if it makes no difference buy a new one, this will solve your starting issues and smooth out your tick over.
