Car cuts out when put into reverse gear

when I put the car in reverse it goes back about 4 feet then starts to judder & the engine cuts out completely - I have to restart about 3 times to get out of a car park space

does it do it in 1st as well dont use throttle.
this will tell if its a running problem or obstruction brake problem etc
