2000 Mercedes Benz E Class key will not turn

we put the infra red key into the ignition and nothing happened, the car does not seem to recognise the key at all, the steering lock will not move and when i normally put the key into the ignition i hear a click and the steering lock releases and i can then start the engine, nothing at all happens, i have tried the spare key and the master key but nothing at all

The only answer to this one I'm afraid is very expensive as it sounds as though the IR receiver has gone defunct. This is a specialist replacement part and not for the faint hearted. I know of this as I have recently hasd to have mine replaced inm my 2000 E320 CDI elegance (coincidence? possibly not) as Mercedes tend to have probs associated with build years. Hope this helps I would have posted sooner but only discovered site today.
