1996 Mazda 626 1st and 2nd gears crunching

While driving south down the M74 I heard a loud screech come from the engine, the car carried on and I stopped at the next services.
On my arrival I noticed that 2nd gear was crunching and to a lesser extent 1st gear too.
I managed to get the car (to Leeds and back) however I cannot use 2nd gear at all due to the horrible crunching.
I fear the worst...

Sounds like your syncro has gone in your gearbox. Would probably be more cost effictive to buy a second hand gearbox. Probably around 100 - 150 pounds for a used gearbox and probablr aroung £120 + vat labour
