1998 Land Rover Freelander no power on top speed

Car: Land Rover Freelander
Year: 1998
Variant: 2.0 diesel
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi

When I was driving my Freelander on a motorway the max speed was 68 mph with my foot flat to the ground which was 1) embarrising and 2) very dangerous lorries up my behind.

there is a whistle before you change gear around 2500 revs

Any ideas

You will not get lorries right behind you at 68 mph, as they are limited to 56 mph although you get some who do 60 mph, this being the maximum speed HGV's can do by law.

It really could be a number of things but if it seems to run ok and the engine doesnt sound rough and no management light on it could be valve or pump timing has slipped (2 belts) if its the early engine. or poss restricted air intake ie filter,
