STARTING UP

2005 Land Rover Freelander 2.0TD4
Car: Land Rover Freelander
Year: 2005
Variant: 2.0TD4
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I have just purchased a freelander TD4 2005, 42000 miles. I have had it 4 days and have found it is really difficult to start up. Get in it in the morning , I wait for the glowplug light to go out, which is pretty immediate. I then turn the ignition on, it tries to start up but just keeps turning over. After 3 or 4 tries ( and 10mins later) it will fire up but there is a huge cloud of smoke blasted out of the exhaust. I am under warranty with dealer any ideas on what the problem could be, or should I give it him back? got attached to the thing already but got major concerns

First thing I would test is all glowplugs .

sounds like a glowplug fault, try waiting an extra 5 or 6 seconds after the light goes out as sometimes the light goes out before they have finished heating but definatly take it back if it has warranty

Glowplug light goes out straight away, we leave it for different lengths of time, it tries to start. What is causing the large blast of exhaust fumes? my neighbours are going nuts,I live in a smoke free zone.... :)
I have took a video of the problem and e-mailed the dealer. I will at least have an idea what to tell him. Thanks chaps. I will keep you posted

I would say it could possible be an injector fault, if not glow plugs, oviously a code read would be a good idea but if not try a leak off test on the injectors
