are you sure its related to the gear lever or just a faulty starter or battery
put a volt meter on the small wire of the starter and turn key to pos 3.is there a voltage?
if not could be iggy switch or isolator switch as you say on lever.the switch is usualy located on the side of the gearbox chech electrical plug is secure and in hasnt been hit.it can be adjusted.
