2018 Kia Venga intermittent pauses of engine which feels as though the brake is being applied

During a normal run the engine will intermittently feel as though there is a loss of power which only lasts a split second. The impression I get is as if the engine is struggling to breath. This happens at most speeds up to 70 mph. There is no warning light but the gear change indicator has ceased to work.
