when starting somtimes it sputters and when reved it chucks out white smoke but not all the time. checked the heater plugs they seem to be ok

could be a head gasket problem get a comprestion test done this will tell you it will be a whitish gray smoke also sheck under the oil filler cap if there is any droplets of water or a white gunge its more suspected to be a head gasket problem

A sniff / block test will confirm if head gasket is leaking or not .White smoke from a diesel is also caused from unburnt fuel . " the heater plugs they seem to be ok " You will have to test them all to make sure they are o.k .
