..anyone experienced clutch problems on 1-2yr old i30's? My mother who has been driving for 40+ years with no clutch issues on a range of makes and models including corsa's, golfs, polo's etc has a clutch issue with her i30 which Hyundai UK Warranty Dept want to put down to her driving and as such will not pay for new clutch install. Car milage is 14,400, 1yr 7 month old. Following being stuck in 2nd gear as she made her way to work, a journey of 25miles, RAC diagnosed problem as slipping clutch. Car was towed to dealership who changed out clutch, pressure plate and rotating bearing. However, resulting phone call from dealership was to inform that this repair was NOT covered by 5yr warranty. Discussed issue with dealership warranty manager who informed me in his opinion issue lay with components and was not driver related however after sending photos to Hyundai UK warranty dept they refused to cover repair cost. There is plenty clutch plate left with grooves clearly visible with good depth, absolutely no heat damage evident on pressure plate. There is however uneven wear on pressure plate fingers which could indicate issue with rotating bearing disengagement. After couple of phone calls to Customer Services i got nowhere therefore have picked up clutch components from dealership.phoned AA for advice on who could provide an independant report. They have put me onto DEKRA-experts and Hyundai have agreed that a report from these guys is suitable...however informed me that even if report states that there is no evidence for fault being caused by driving style i.e heavy use of clutch, they may still refuse to cover repair!!! Will find out in next few days....could be Trading Standards next and possibly a few trips to dealership entrance to chat about this fabulous 5yr warranty with prospective buyers.
P.S. If anyone is wondering, report from DEKRA is expensive at £195...but after showing components to a few mechanics who are astounded that Hyundai are blaming clutch failure on driving style, together with dealership warranty manager opinion...i think it's worth it.

I had a family member wanting to buy a Hyundai due mainly to the warranty .After I got a detailed account of warranty and examined / compared it to other franchises I told them to forget it . No Hyundai dealership is authorised to perform warranty work until they have established with Hyundai themselves that the repair is covered by warranty .That is just one of the many reasons , apart from the actual coverage .Ridiculous they dispute the dealership warranty managers opinion .If they honour the warranty after the report from DEKRA , claim the fee back from them . I think in some cases they also carry out repairs , charge the cost to customer who then has to see if it is covered and refunded !! Best of luck , keep us updated ?

Thanks for reply 'Legend'...will keep folk posted.
Being honest have to say that Customer Services did state that if Hyundai UK did reverse their initial decision then cost of independant report would be met by them. However they were also at pains to state that Hyundai UK may not change decision even if report verifies dealership warranty managers conclusion. Great for customer relations and customer confidence i'm thinking...NOT! Will definitely be persuading my mother to revert back to Vauxhalls VW's or Fords.
The sad thing is, the dealership have been great with me..they're just let down by head office....meanwhile i'm driving my mum to and from work whilst car sits in garage.

Having ran different main dealer franchise service depts , I never had that kind of attitude before .I've read and heard through the trade of people having the similar problems with warranty claims .If we had any clutches that had mechanical parts defects they were covered , no qualms .Only if nothing evident were the claims rejected due to wear and tear or driving style .Even then I could usually wangle a concession towards repairs as a company gesture or abnormal warranty repair .Pays dividends in customer satifaction in the long run .Dont know if contacting Hyundai customer services direct would help , probably not .In my opinion , with the known facts , very poor service .

Just noticed you have been in contact with the Customer services at the factory . I was thinking it was customer services at dealership you had been dealing with .

...just one last question, if there is no sign of excessive clutch use...i would have thought that can only lead to a root cause to be associated with 1 or more of the following ....1) fault with materials of construction, 2) fault with component manufacture/assembly or 3) faulty final installation?....which i would have thought would be covered by warranty.
Have politely asked Customer Service to request reply from head warranty office as to why they believe issue to reside with way vehicle has been driven when this is at odds with dealership warranty manager..i.e..what do they see that he doesn't...ah or vice-versa!!

A slipping clutch should not have caused sticking in 2nd gear.uneven wear on clutch pressure plate fingers would need answering.Normally caused by clutch bearing out of alignment with clutch diaphram for what ever reason.Seen one on a Saab at the weekend where it was caused by the bearing sticking on the spigot shaft tube that the bearing slides on.They will probably try and say that it indicates resting foot on the clutch.

....would you consider uneven wear on fingers caused by resting foot on clutch to be a valid cause or just a defensive response? ..would i be wrong in assuming excessive foot resting on clutch would show up as increased but even finger wear?

Appreciate the replies...thanks v much! K

Would have expected wear on fingers to be even .
