2004 Hyundai Coupe intermittent power loss after ignition start

Intermittently (about 30% of the the time), around 2-4 seconds after starting the car with the ignition, everything cuts out - the revs plummet and the accelerator is unresponsive as it cuts out.
The problem seems to be deteriorating - today the ignition took around 8 tries to get started and then cut out (as described) twice before starting and staying running. Car was warm having been driven for 30 minutes and left for 5.
Car runs fine whilst on the road and has never stalled at low revs or while running idle.

Advise check for fault codes first.
