2000 Honda Civic lack of power

Recently bought this car, low milage full history, starts and runs well enough around town, but problem comes on uphill sections, it's just so weak!!
I have a '96 Colt 1.3 which, in the same stretches of road, doesn't even notice the sections where the Civic can't maintain 50mph!
Another problem, perhaps related, perhaps not, is that at ~4000rpm, under load, the thing starts to make a really strange rythmic noise. Kind of like wind noise, but harsher, more rythmic, and it seems to come from inside the cabin. Sounds rediculous, but it's similar to the whup,whup sound of a movie helicopter!! Speed makes no diference to the noise, only at ~4000 rpm, and only under load.
Any and all help/opinions greatfully appreciated

the helicopter noise will be a rough wheel bearing. as for power loss, check exhaust.... they do block up on those!!!

The helicopter noise is way too loud for a wheel bearing. It sounds as though it's coming from the instrament panel!
How would you check the exhaust for blockage?
You've got me wondering now.... Could the 'helicoper' be the rythmic release of exhaust pressure? Hmmmm

I had a similar problem with my 2000 civic coupe sport, my mechanic could not find any fault then decided to check the exhaust for a blockage even though the exhaust looked in good condion and was not noisy. The mufflers or something like that had disintegrated. New exhaust and power returned.

I'm becoming more and more convinced this is the problem. Looks like I need to strip it down. Son is student type working for pennies, so he can't afford to replace 'on spec'.

I thought I'd post this to round off the problem.
We had a look at the exhaust, and found the back box very rattly, removed it, and it was FULL of crud. The remnants of the internal baffles, I presume. Really wierd, since the exterior of the whole system looks no more than a few months old. Anyway, new back box is on and the car is a completely diffferent beast. Son is delighted, and I'm restored to Superhero status. All is well!!
