2001 Ford Mondeo car not starting when fuel runs low

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 2001
Variant: 1.8L Petrol
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,

I recently swapped my 2.0L Bora for a 1.8L mondeo. Really pleased with it, the fuel consumption is a massive improvement and car tax is way cheaper.

However every time I let the petrol drop below about an 1/8 of a tank full, it won't start and it needs a jump start.

Any ideas?, I've heard all kinds of reasons from dirty petrol to airlocks in the fuel line. I have a workaround the moment by keeping the tank topped up but would like to get to the guts of the problem.

Regards
Mike

Cant see how a jump start would cure air lock in fuel system or dirty petrol .As you suggest , dont run your tank so low .If the tank is so low that the fuel pump wont lift it how does the jump start cure it ?

It's strange, the starter just ticks over but the engine isn't engaging. Then when I give it a push down the hill outside our house and start it in 2nd gear it usually fires up after 1 or 2 goes

Unless when sitting on the hill the little petrol in the car has moved away from fuel pump pick up tube and the movement when rolling down and starting it in gear lets petrol splash about and get pumped / lifted to engine .Take it the engine is turning over fast enough when trying to start ?

It's turning over fast enough to start alright the engine just ain't catching the starter.

And then as soon as I put in £20 worth of petrol it starts no problems
