Erratic idling/no power

My car used to start first time ever time.
On wed I tried to start it, it started ok but I could not drive it as when I put my foot on the acelerator the power jumps up and down, it doesnt rev massively, just goes from a little to a bit then back.
It also feels like it is miss firing.
Any ideas?
It may have no bearing but last week when my wife drove she scraped the under side of the car on a large bump. The car drove home fine.
And has been started since once and was fine.

It is quite possible when your wife hit the underneath of the car that she hit the catylitic converter and the inside of it has broke up and turned in the exhaust blocking it up, I would suggest diconnecting the front of the cat and starting it up and seeing if it revs up as normal. Might be a little noisy but will prove if it is the cat.
