2004 Ford Mondeo car stalling under oad

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.8 dueatec he
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi all,

at my wits end with this car, firstly it broke down two weeks ago and was tested for everything from a blocked exhaust to a knackered engine, was eventually diagnosed with a faulty fuel pump.
anyway went and got one from the local scrappies and fitted it and there was no difference so the garage reccommended having all wiring to the pump tested, so my matey has rigged up the pump via a toggle switch directly to the battery to bypass all the wiring as a test.
turned out that the second pump was faulty also (chances of that eh??) so we replaced it again and woohoo everythin was perfect.

however now we are back to square one!

the car will run for about half a mile as normal, full revs etc, however then especially when u reach 70 in fourth gear it suddenly loses all power and if you dip the clutch the engine stalls or sits at idle with a slight misfire.
To me this seems like fuel starvation but surely i couldnt have bought two dud pumps in a row, also when u turn the car off and back on it has full power again for another half mile

does anyone have any ideas before i go out my mind and scrap the mutant? so far all the parts and labour r edging toward the 500 mark and it becoming less cost effective now but i would hate to scrap it for something as stupid as ht leads?

Might be worth changing fuel filter too. They are nice and cheap.

Hesitance and power loss usually fuel related in my experience.

Misfiring is more likely to be electrical.

Check the air filter element and make sure none of the pipes connecting the box are split or detached.

Good luck.

hi thanks you for the advice, it had a fuel filter changed as a matter of course, i checked all of the pipes around the engine and none look damaged.
the misfire only happens if the car doesnt stall but has lost all its power.
its also burning fuel like mad which says to me it may b a faulty injector and possibly reducing the fuel pressure, that or a sensor but would you have any ide which sensor regulates the fuel/air mix?

Have a look at the spark plug electrodes - they should all be dry and greyish/beige in colour. If one of them looks different this could indicate the injector for that cylinder is playing up.

Regarding the fuel mixture I think this is regulated by the ECU. Can you get a diagnostic check done?

As Rmar suggests , get car scanned rather than guessing and wasting time and money on parts that are not fixing fault .

thank again for all advice given, i took the car to the garage this morning, its had the diagnostics done and that has shown no faults stored in memory, i will check the plugs just now and will send a further update when i see what condition they are in.

Hi again all,
i have taken the plugs out and there was one that definitly stood out from the rest.
the plugs are only two weeks old, went by halfords reccomendations for champion eon 3.

anyway 1, 2, and 4 plugs are all the usual waer and tear colour u would expect to see.

No 3 however isnt, it is still almost new looking - ie, the insulator is still bright white, and when matched to a plug diagram on the net, it says, that causes for this are plug insufficently tightened, engine temp too high, plug heat range too high.

its also says symptoms of this are loss of acceleration at high speed, and loss of power under heavy load which is exactly what mine is doing.

i will change the plug today and let you all know how it goes however if anyone has any other ideas please by all means let me know, i am desperate to get to the bottom of this.

If that plug hasn't been firing it could indicate the coil or lead for that plug is faulty.

Sounds like you are getting closer to solving the nightmare!

Could also check compression on that cyl .
