2004 Ford Mondeo no power under load

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.8
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
the problem is exactly what the title says whe u try to drive the car, as soon as it hits 3500 - 4000rpm its starts to lose power cut out as if it isnt getting enough fuel.
had the AA man out who suspected a blocked cat, so disconnected the full exhaust and it still drove terribly.
i changed the fuel filter and park plugs today, checked all connections and vacuum hoses and all appears to be in order.
anyone have any ideas?

try egr valve

sorry i meant to say, i thought of the egr valve aswell and have already placed a blanking plate behind it, but to no avail, car still runs like s**t.
i am at a complete loss just now, have been doing a lot of research on the subject and all saying the same thing, that garages are generally unable to trace the fault as the tolerances on the sensors stop any error codes flagging up.
has anyone else had this sort of problem and fond a cure for it?
