2001 Ford Mondeo stutters on de-acceleration

car drives lovely but recently if i relax my foot on gas pedal the engine stutters and almost stalls also now have to change down to lower gear very early approaching junctions or the same fault happens yet while driving at a constant speed or accelerating the fault is not there help as this is becoming dangerous at times .
