1998 Ford Mondeo mileometer (odometer?) not working.

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 1998
Variant: 2.0 Si
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
A few months ago, the mile recorder stopped working, as did the trip 'computer', and the temperature gauge. The speedometer and fuel gauges still work correctly. My car has read 96,999 miles for the past few months, but can find no reason why. Someone must know! Thanks!

Hi there,
This just happened to my Mondeo, so today I pulled out instrument cluster and disassembled speedo. The culprit is a plastic worm gear attached to a small stepper motor that increments the odometer and trip meeter. Mine was broken and when I took it off the shaft it fell apart! So solution is to simply fit a replacement. The stepper motor comes off easily, and the worm gear is a push fit. I haven't sourced one yet - a crowd in the US sells them for US$25 which aint cheap!

If you want instructions to remove the cluster, there is a great set at www.Fordwiki.co.uk, the only tricky part is the speedo needle - it isn't splined so you will need to reset it at switch on. Let me know if you want more detail on that.

Good luck!
