Car diagnostic reads "Unknown"

Had my car seen by mechanic because Engine Management Light came on .He checked the on-board computer with diagnostic reader and the fault came up saying "Unknown".
The car is in for further tests.....question is has this happened to any one ? and would you know what it could be ?...car has been serviced recently.

Hi ...not sure what system was used to diagnose the problem.....clearly I never knew there are different systems.

Well usually when this kind of thing pops up I state manufacturers software diagnostics is more likely not to get confused.
So in this case Ford diagnostics needed.
I have seen this kind of msg on some very high end diagnostic equipment.
So it's either main dealer or someone who has Ford IDS.
Or if you have a local "Bosch" diagnostic specialist they usually aren't stumped by weird MSG's.
