Automatic gear selector

Have only had car a few weeks. Today tried to drive but button on gear selector will not go in to permit gear selection. If I stand hard on the brake and try pushing in the button after many tries it may go in. Help.

Check your brake lights are working . The p- lock solenoid is operated by the brake switch. If not that gear lever assembly solenoid might be the fault .
