2002 Ford Mondeo very low power and slow revving. backfiring through air intake

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 2002
Variant: 2.0 LX
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi, thanks to anyone in advance who answers. All help greatly appreciated. We have a 2002 ford Mondeo 2litre LX estate. It has extremely low power though will rev right out slowly. It is back firing through the air intake manifold. It will start first turn no problems but idles up and down. Engine management light is on and It has been plugged into a computer, the only fault the computer read was the egr valve which has been replaced but made no difference. This car has had new injectors, new timing chain, new leads and plugs, and full service. Many are baffled by the issue, hence seeking help on here to see if anyone has came across it and how to solve the problem... Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks

As mentioned above but has it been timed up properly Also I think it may have a vvt hub on the cams and can also cause problems.Could also be a problem with the inlet butterflys but these normally give you a warning by rattling.

Hi thank you both very much for responding, it is greatly appreciated. Will check all that you both said tomorrow. Was looking in round the cat whilst it was running and piping behind the cat glows red and the cat itself is solid. Would the insides of it have collapsed and cause a pressure resulting in the problem I'm having?

The car once started runs OK for few minutes then starts messing and pressuring up. A few mechanics have looked at it and are baffled by it. The timing has been checked several times and is OK. It was a different mechanic put a new coil pack on its was an aftermarket one, and when I changed the order of the plug leads that is when she started to run perfect, which was short lived. But now we do have a few minutes of running OK before it starts low power and revving very slow,

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thank you both for your time

cat could be blocked if you can loosen the flange before it you could try running it to see if revs better,Easier said than done I know due to corroded fixings.

If you have a 02 / lambda sensor fitted pre cat , might be easier to remove that rather than try to drop exhaust .If not , drop exhaust as suggested .
