every so often when i excelerate engine cuts out has happened when overtaking and driving over 65mph

You dont mention what engine in car and whether petrol or diesel.

If this is a pre-2005 PETROL car, the inlet manifold has 'butterfly' valves which can be ingested by the engine. This is catastrophic and writes off the engine. I know, as this happened to me. I decided to replace the engine. Post 2005 Mondeo Petrol engines have a modofied inlet manifold.
