1997 Ford Mondeo mondeo temp gauge hardly moves

I have a '97 mondeo 2.0 zetec engine (silver top)its only done 37k miles and has spent most of its life doing short trips or parked in garage.
Problem is temp gauge rarely moves and if it does move its only a tiny bit, dosnt over heat and blowers seem to work as they should, any help much appreciated cheers

how can i test to see if its a temp sendor or thermostat

Remove thermostat and see if it's stuck open or test with boiling water in a cup or dish .

as this car is 16 year old and hardly been anywere is it possible thermostat could be sticky as car is now in daily use could it free up and work as normal again, just dont wanna take it to bits if i dont need to, also will it do any harm to engine-i mean as long as it dosnt over heat cheers

if its not working properly you really need to change it as the engine will not run as efficiently as it could
