2005 Ford Mondeo engine reving up when stopping

Problem that every time the car comes to a halt the engine revs up to 2000 RPM before going back to the idle speed of under 1000 RPM. Anty ideas what the fault might be?

Check first that there's nothing hindering the mechanical side of thing,s at the pedal and throttle end .
