Knackered starter motor and loss of power

2002 Ford Mondeo TDCI
Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 2002
Variant: TDCI
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
For the past week when I turned the key the starter would play up. Then I would try again and it would work. I would rock the car and it would start it too. Then yesterday driving in 2nd gear and the car just completly cut out - a clattering noise occured just before.Could not start it back up.
I had to be towed. Now there is no power and the battery is dead. Tower said starter motor has gone and no power could be alternator? Is it worth changing starter or is the damage been done?
Cheers

when you were starting car before did it sound quite rough?these cars suffer with the dual mass flywheel failing reulting in excess movement and damaging starter motors, did u notice the clutch pedal pulsating when u had your foot on it as that is usually a good sign it is gone
