Battery cable overheating

2000 Ford Mondeo st24 2.5l v6 saloon

the thick cable going to the positive side of the battery has over heated,the insulation has melted from where its connected to the battery to about 2 inches up cable.is it normal for this cable to get so hot?,if not does anyone know why this is?the battery is quite new.

firstly you want to get the cable replaced as its now a fire hazard one other thing that could cause the cable to melt the insulation like that is one alternator over charging so have that checked once the cable has been replaced and the other thing that can melt it is cranking the engine for long periods

the only other thing is if the cable was loose or just old corroision can set in the resistance would raise in the cable so the good strands in the cable would have to work harder. so its like using too thin a cable.so it gets hot.just replacing the cable may fix the problem
