1993 Ford Mondeo engine losing power then stop

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 1993
Variant: 1.8 lx
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
We've had the Mondeo about 5 or 6 years and in that time the engine has juddered on occassion. It was cleared quickly by either driving in 2nd gear for a while (until it cleared itself), or by stopping the engine, waiting a few seconds, then restarting it.
Then recently, the engine just stopped as we were driving along fully laden. We managed to get the car parked safetly, but it hasn't started since. The fuel pump is working, the engine turns fine, but it doesn't fire up. Plenty of fuel, battery is nearly new, no signs of anything "missing" or "broken" in the engine compartment. Any ideas?
Please help, I'm driving around in a DAEWOO at the moment !! Thanx.

Check you are getting a spark , fuel . Cant remember if that year has a cambelt , if so check it's not snapped / jumped .

I have a spark, I have fuel and the cambelt is all present and correct, but she still wont fire up.

Take out plugs and see if they are wet , check compressions at same time .Could check engine coolant temp sensor which tells ECU how much fuel needed .

Took plugs out and were wet, but not sure how to dry them,(other than a rag), done.
How to check compressions ? or check engine coolant temp sensor ? Please.

Thanx for all help so far :)

To check compressions you need a compression gauge , not every one has one . If plugs wet you can heat / dry them over a gas ring . But usually we just replaced them as it wasn't worth the hassle . The ECT sensor is normally replaced if suspect / given symptoms of being faulty as not much in price .The plugs being wet verifies you are getting fuel , eliminates that side . You need to also check / test plug leads and coil pack .If any dampness / dirt , especially on coil pack can cause spark to track and short .I would change plugs and clean plug leads and coil pack with a cloth first and try that .

Well I'll have to have another couple of days off soon to get all that done.
Thanx very much for your help, I'll try all of the above and more and let you know what happens asap.
Thanx again for all the help, most appreciated.

See how you get on and if needing further help get back to forum . Forgot to mention , to test ignition / plug leads , if required , you need an ohm meter to test resistance .

I found the problem, it was as you said - a broken cambelt. OMG, thats it, I got to save up for a new Mondeo.
Just a quick note about the info you gave(give) out : I checked what I thought was the cambelt and it was OK, but didn't realise the Mondeo has an auxillary belt,(which is the one I checked!), then called a mobile mechanic to check the car and he found the cambelt had broken. So please let others know there is another belt on this car.
Thanx for all the help, much appreciated. :)
