2005 Ford Mondeo power loss

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 2005
Variant: 2.0ltr TDCI 130bhp
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
A couple of weeks ago whilst driving at a constant speed of 70mph the car felt like it was accelerating slightly, then easing off, then accelerating, easing off only whilst at this speed.
The car was service, fuel & oil filters replaced and no code ergistered on the computer. Gradually this is getting worse and occuring at lower speeds and more frequently. The fuel consumption has increased and when I accelerate hard now I leave clouds of black smoke in my wake. The car is now smoking at lower revs too. It now struggles up hills. I have phoned garages and they keep just wanting to put it on the computer, but it has been on twice and nothing registers. Any ideas?

Is it a turbo? If so check to see that the intercooler or turbo pipe isn't split somewhere. The Laguna's are notorious for the turbo's packing up! Another thing I can think of is the injectors, it might be worth hooking it up to an oscilloscope and seeing what the spray pattern's like, not sure that would cause it to rev up though :S just a couple of thoughts :)
