1995 Ford Mondeo temp gauge and coolant level warning

Car: Ford Mondeo
Year: 1995
Variant: 2.0 Ghia auto
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My temp gauge sometimes reads normal and then suddenly reads cold while driving and my Coolant level warning flashes on and off randomly even though my coolant level is ok.
I've just bought this car so don't have much experience with it.
If it helps my heater works :)

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Engine coolant temp sensor or wiring / conection fault at same .

Is that the sensor on top of the thermostat?

They vary from different engines / year . That is a temp sensor and may be the correct one . But some models had the sensor for the gauge seperate and fitted into cyl head .If it has a 4 pin plug that will probably be it as the one fitted to head was usually just a single wire .This is from a previous question re temp gauge .
