2002 Ford Maverick overdrive light flashing

The overdrive light flashes steadily on and off after the car has been driving for some time under load (eg after 1 hour of towing a horse box at 50mph).
The flashing light is not there the following day, tt does not happen under any other circumstances.
The manual states its an indication of a gearbox fault, however it still appears to work fine with or without the flashing light.
Does anyone know what the fault could be?

When was the last time the ATF and filter were changed ?
