2002 Ford Focus loss of acceleration & engine management light on.

hi there,
bought my car earlier this year and problem started about a 2 months ago. a bit long winded so pls bear with me.
when accelerating, it looses power, feels juddery almost like its coughing but no noise. engine management light is on. if i play around with the pedal i can usually find a bite (with very light pedal use) unless im going even slightly upwards in 5th gear. tried running cleaners through it checking for damaged pipes & all the basics. even tried looking for an error thru the lcd panel (it comes up dtc none).
when it first started the engine management light flashed a few times but went off again. running redex thru it seemed to fix for a week & then it came back with a vengence. now the light is on permanantly though flashes occasionly.
problem is intermittent as some times it drives fine!
poor single dad, so would like to try and fix this without unneccasary spending!

could well be plug leads breaking down causing missfire, also check plugs in good cond

Get a diagnostic scan carried out and see what shows .Common fault was water in plug wells , worth checking .
