i have an intermittent fault that leaves my battery flat, it will be ok for days or weeks then the battery will be flat in the morning, a new battery has been fitted, the alternater is ok and there are no obvious signs of anything being left on

If battery ok and alternator output / charging rate all right , you may have a parasitic drain . This explains how to test and locate .
