Engine playing up?

other day made silly mistake of leaving oil cap off and oil got everywhere. whether this is relevant or not i dont know.
Currently the car is, when on the motorway at a consistent high speed, cutting out and the engine feels like it is not in gear properly. all i have to do is pull my foot off the gas and put it back on. the revs do not go up if i keep my foot on the accelerator during lapse in acceleration. when driving in low gears in the city cannot feel this happen at all.
it is not the clutch slipping had a replacement and problem carried on
any advice would be apprecited

I take it you topped oil back up? and which engine do you have ?
