Speedo failure - intermittent

2000 Ford Focus 1.8 zetec
Car: Ford Focus
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.8 zetec
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
my speedo stops working within 5 minutes of the start of most journeys. Sometimes it makes the car stall at a roundabout as the revs drop. Other occassions it also makes the mileometer disappear it just has lines althrough it. At the same time I notice a reduction in power to the engine. Any suggestions?? This also happens more often when the car is used less!

have a auto electricion give it the once over as you may find that its the speedo causing all the problems if it is the speedo at fault then this can only be replaced at the dealers by law and they will put the same mileage that is currently on the speedo when you get there that if the auto electricion doesnt find anything else

I would say the instruments are faulty, new ones can be expensive, i tend to have them repaired.

you donot say if it is manual or automatic it does make a diffrence if it is automatic have you used the cig liter because the transmission on the automatic is on the same circuit check all fuse till you find the blown one remember it might look ok but if you have a meter to test them it would be better cheers willie

hi jennie, been having the same problems with my focus. It's the idle control valve thats causing the car to cut out. They cost around 40 pound from fords. My car will cut out up to 5 times every journey causing a few near misses! If im rolling when the car cuts out i just bump start it! Also the speedo stops strait away and the mileage counter does the same as yours. dont know if this is linked to the idle control valve as haven't got round to getting one yet. Hope this has helped you.

Hi jennie i am having the exact problem although Fords charged and fitted a new instrument cluster thinking it was that causing the problem. Its still as bad as it ever was and now |Ford is saying a different problem, please can you let me know if and how you resolved this so i have an idea what it could be. Thank you Vicky
