Lost power on motorway, stopped to see temp guage go up to red. Open bonnet, steaming from fan berlt area. Let it cool then drive to garage top up with lost water. Run 30 miles to get home, temp guage stayed ok. Had rattling noise from engine for 2 weeks.

Could this be water pump?

From what you say , sounds like could be water pump knackered / leaking . Bearing goes , causing rattle and leak . If so need to get done asap .
