2006 Ford Focus fuel in diesel lines

Car: Ford Focus
Year: 2006
Variant: 2.0 TDCi Zetec
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi there,

I've owned this car for about 3 weeks and have had the RAC out to it 3 times already. The problem was originally then when I slowed to a halt the revs would dip, the ODO display would change to "Engine Systems Fault" and then the revs would pick up and the message would disappear. Last week the car wouldn't start, and when Ford had it back they said there were no fault codes.

It wouldn't start again at the weekend and RAC came out again. This time (and possibly last time too) it was because there was no diesel in the fuel lines at all (there was half a tank showing). No matter how much the engine cranked, no fuel would flow. The RAC guy hand-primed the engine and the car fired first time. However, once it was running there were small air bubbles in the fuel line when idling, and large bubbles (full width of fuel line and about 2 inches long) when the revs were increased.

RAC have advised that this is almost definitely the cause of all the problems I've had, and that Ford need to work out where the air is being introduced. Has anyone seen this in other Ford Diesels, and what is the likely cause? How easy is it to eradicate or do I need to think abouyt returning the car as not fit for purpose?

Thanks
Smigg

Of course the title should have read "Air in diesel lines"!!

From another forum it appears that these are classic symptoms of a faulty EGR so I'm going to pursue that line with Ford.

I have just experienced a similar problem with a new ford kuga, same engine as focus. No outcome yet but the ford service manager said had I added any petrol to the tank, yes I was very annoyed especially since I had travelled over 250 miles since the fill in the tank. Sorry i cannot offer any solution yet as my car is under investigation but I will keep you posted.
