Check for air leaks hoses off ,throttle sticking, also code read may provide a starting point for diagnostic.

It may be down to a faulty idle control valve-a common focussism!I'm unsure that this fault may show up via engine management light but would be best to check out the vacuum hoses at rear of engine first since its better than forking out about 60 quid for the control valve. Do the revs settle down if you blip the throttle as I used to own a 1.8 2001 model that did this but with hard driving it seemed to sort it out. Best of luck.
