2001 Ford Focus engine keeps reving

Hi just bought this car it was reving abit high when started would rev at just over 2000 but would drop down to about 1200 but now after two days the car when first started will rev as high as4000 will then come down to 1200 but keeps going up and down even when driven the revs keep going up and down from 1200 to 400 plus can you help

Hi you have poss got a air leak on the intake manifold in the middle there are 2 breather hoses that come from crank breather valve they are common for splitting and drawing in air after you fix pipes disconnect battery earth for 10 mins and that will reset PCM [powertrain control module]because car would have addapted to your air leak . Hope this helps
