Fuel light and engine cuts

my fuel light is on and the gauge says empty, the engine then cuts out. You can start the engine right away with the key no problem, it then runs for about 20 seconds and the cuts out again. It then restarts again with the key... and on and on and on!

this may sound stupid but you do have fuel in the beast. now being real about this the fuel tank float may be faulty and telling the ecu that you have insufficient fuel check this by disconecting the float you could short it out to see but not advised check with a volt meter
