2004 Ford Focus warm/hot start leads to rockin & rolling engine jive baby

Car: Ford Focus
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.8 TDCi (1800cc)
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Can't quite get my head around this one, but when re-starting when the engine is hot the engine 'Rocks & Rolls, Baby'. It has a mind of it's own. Start from cold no problem, no loud clanging, no rocking as if the engine is about to jettison itself into outer space. When this does happen and it is now becoming regular I have to turn the ignition off because I fear that the engine will be minced.

From what I have read so far and I could well be barking up the wrong tree it sounds to me as though the aux belt/timing/ tensioner might be the culprit seeing as the sounds that emanated from the engine sounded like the clash of piston heads and valve seats. I hope I am wrong.

The car has done 75000 miles, and still has original parts. Bottom line is 'How much is this going to cost me?", a new belt and new tensioner for example. If it isn't the belt what else might it be??

This was a 2008 post so prices will vary ,

02 1.8 TDCi Timing belt or chain - Graemetdci

" As stated above, it's a timing belt the change interval of which is 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first. Many would advocate earlier changes as while the belt is pretty durable, the tensioners can give up.

When I had my 2002 1.8 TDCi, I got the belt changed at 80,000 miles at a local Ford Rapidfit which cost £195 and included changing the belt and tensioners (which are exactly the same as would have been used at the main dealer next door, but for much less and with same guarantee)."
